Carey Weiss

Artist bio/Statement

Carey Weiss is an environmental scientist and fine arts photographer based in the Delaware River Valley of New Jersey, whose work is in many private collections. In her creative arts endeavors she works primarily in medium format photography to produce silver gelatin darkroom prints with high resolution, rich tonal depth and smooth tonal gradients. Her imagery contrasts urban world themes and human emotions with the lush greenery of forests and rivers. The sharp juxtaposition of one world vs.the other – and the complete dependence of the human world on the natural environment – is the subject of much of her photography.

As an environmental scientist Carey has spent her career immersed in studies, data, facts, and figures. Yet, she has found these tools less effective at inspiring stewardship of the planet’s natural resources than art and imagery, which speak directly to the heart. As forests grow increasingly endangered and species decline at an alarming pace, the challenge is to use both science and art to move people to action. The rhythm of the artist’s subjects, and of course her trees, branch out like veins and tributaries that reveal a deep understanding and reverence for the vital flow of our infinitely interconnected world.

Carey’s images in the Lodge at Woodloch Fall 2026 show were printed by Steve Rifkin of Hank’s Photographic Services in New York. Steve is universally regarded by top-tier photographers, museums, and galleries as a master printer noted for an intuitive ability to listen to photographers, interpret intent, and execute precise technical decisions regarding contrast, tone, and mood. His print studio utilizes exclusive high-standard fiber-based papers and meticulous processing that meets or exceeds strict museum guidelines.

Frames and mats were created by hand in the studio of Roger Burdick of Fencefield Frames in Lenox, Massachusetts.
