Raul Vega

Artist Statement

Raul Vega specializes in textured canvasses, using a rich mixture of layered paints, which are often applied with brushes in combination with pallet knife creating a dramatic and very intriguing optical and dimensional effect. He has developed a unique technique that benefits the artist's creative vision. His work is evidence that his patience and artistic development from his days formally studying art at the University of PR and Pontificia University and later, at the prestigious Pratt Institute, have remarkably paid off.

The artist sits for long periods of time quietly contemplating his subjects in tropical and temperate places. With plants and water serving as his muse, in his imagination, he breaches the boundaries of the physical world around him, digging deep inside and down to the invisible subatomic level where all things flow and interconnect. Many of his works are purposefully abstracted patterns, deconstructed designs to recall and explore nature. Raul also creates rich, sensual portraits of recognizable plants and flowers that he loves, capturing color, light and lush textures that abound in the wondrous garden outside his home in Hawley, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

His artwork has been exhibited at the Paul Fisher Gallery in West Palm Beach, in a series of artists' surveys, "Art at the Whitney" in West Palm Beach, Bluestone Gallery in Milford, PA, ArtHouse429 and The Center of Creative Education in WPB. The artist's work has been acquired by the Coral Springs Museum of Art and the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts.  Raúl’s work was also included in the “Bling” Art That Shines at the Cornell Museum of Art in Delray Beach. In addition, his work has been exhibited at the Art Concept Miami, Art Palm Beach, International Warehouse District W. Palm Beach. In 2021, Raúl’s work was exhibited at the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro in New York City. From June through August of 2022, Raúl’s artwork is being exhibited in the “Summer Group Show” at the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, New York.

Raul distinguishes himself stylistically through his aggressive textured surfaces, and purposeful abstract patterns created by nature. His artwork has expanded throughout his career while retaining certain characteristic elements of his unique style of painting.
